The Power of Language
Many underestimate the power of language. Language is not simply a tool for communication, but holds the essence of societies and cultures. It is a key to a people and their heritage. That is why it is critical now, more than ever, in the face of increasing globalization that languages be remembered and passed on to subsequent generations. We can only move forward with purpose if we remember where we have been.
What better way to protect these languages into the future than to include them in the process of globalization? The very thing that has endangered them can be the key to their future. Through venues such as the internet these previously little known languages now have a voice and an audience in the form of listeners across the globe. Listeners that can learn of other cultures through these languages and who in return can help to preserve these languages and the rich cultural history that is encoded in them.
Babel’s Rosetta Stone’s Mission
The goal of this blog is to accumulate as much information as possible on as many languages as possible – both the widely spoken and the obscure. Some languages have no shortage of information available on them while others have essentially none that is readily accessible. The hope is to make as much information as possible available. Eventually this information on various languages will be presented in a variety of languages.
It’s a Global Effort
Are you a native speaker of a language other than English? Especially if you are a native speaker of a lesser known language any information or suggestion of resources you could provide would be immensely helpful.
You Can Help By:
- Editing existing language pages – if you see errors on any of the pages on you native language corrections or suggestions for improvement would be greatly appreciated
- Offering information that you feel is vital to the core of your language or is just plain interesting – anything you wish to share would be helpful
- Help with the creation of audio in your language so that others can hear it spoken by native speakers
- Native English speakers can help by learning another language – if you have never studied another language before you will be amazed at how enriching it is
My Background
My native language is American English and I would be happy to assist anyone working to learn English in exchange for information about your native language. I have done a great deal of informal study on English grammar and I am fascinated by the grammatical structure of many languages.
In school I studied Latin and on my own and I have spent time with a wide variety of other languages. I love to learn and I love to teach and hope to do quite a bit of both here.
